"Marie's paintings are portraits of universal women ~ not of this age, not of this place, not of a particular woman, but of all ages, all places, and all women. There is an eternal quality about them that transcends the universe."
Jeana Peterson (collector)
"Marie's painting helps me tap into the river of feminine wisdom that flows through life."
Marilyn Rampley (collector)
"Each piece of Marie's art possesses a
warm positive energy that evokes
the spirit of the divine."
Karen Stewart Elliot (collector)
"Marie Howell is a visionary artist whose work stirs the soul. When you look into the eyes of the beings represented in the paintings ~ there is a beauty and depth there that makes you wonder what the message the artist, and the being in the painting, is communicating. Both ethereal, as well as grounded ~ her work takes the viewer to another world within themselves."
Shiloh Sophia McCloud (artist)
Marie Howell, Visionary Artist
I am a lifelong art maker, exploring both 2D and 3D media while integrating traditional and non-traditional techniques and materials that express my original vision. I invite viewers into a personal encounter with the feminine image and its ability to nurture, transform, and empower. I also strive to bring a fresh perspective to symbolic representations of the feminine such as bees, dragonflies, and crowns.
I am currently focusing my creative energies on acrylic painting and "assembled" sculptural collage, adding the decorative element of embellishment and adornment to both. The style of my work is described as Contemporary Symbolism and I have come to identify my feminine images as Contemporary Sacred Icons. I work at a deeply intuitive level to create pieces that I hope will offer an unspoken message of joy and healing to the viewer.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Art Education and a Master's in Counseling and my extensive work in both fields have informed my art with a unique understanding and perspective. My experience with mentoring and guiding teenage girls has reinforced my desire to support women of every age in discovering their inherent wisdom and particular gifts.
I have led women's creativity circles, am a member of local artist guilds, and have presented a talk on women's creativity at the International Women's Club of Arizona. When I was invited to lead a workshop at the Arizona Goddess Conference, I created a hands-on creativity experience entitled "Reaching for Me" which brought tears to the eyes and smiles to the lips of participants.
I am also passionate about exploring spiritual and personal growth. When I am painting a canvas, it becomes an altar on which I rediscover, time and again, my Divine connection, my muse, and myself, all at once. I consider it a privilege to support others as they unearth their own sacred creativity through art and writing opportunities.
This work and this art that now define my life are the direct result of my immersion in a plethora of courses and gatherings with Cosmic Cowgirls University. I am most grateful to my mentor and teacher Shiloh Sophia McCloud who has generously gifted me with her loving support and extraordinary expertise in both painting and women's creativity.
My journey to the destination called Visionary Artist has unfolded over a lifetime. I don't think it's a coincidence that I currently live in Phoenix, a place named for a powerful legend about resurrection and transformation. That is what my life has been about. And that is what my art is about. I am happy to be sharing it with you here.
